Good website to go over political and news claims being made at present. Clinton's awesome-o foreign policy experience is the current top story. It's a nice tool that tries to help people make up their minds in an informed, non-f'ed with manner as opposed to actually listening to people you probably shouldn't (i.e. 99% of politicians). |

Bisexuality is a Distinct Sexual Orientation
In 2005 a paper in Psychological Science debunked the idea that men have bisexual attraction (they’re either gay or straight the study concluded). Ok, still up for debate. But what about women? Does bisexuality legitimately exist in women? This week the American Psychological Association published the first longitudinal study of female bisexuality. Dr. Lisa Diamond studied 79 women over a 10-year period, in an attempt to define female bisexuality. She found no evidence for the commonly held view that bisexuality is an experimental phase, enroute to lesbianism or heterosexuality. Rather she found that bisexuality in women is a distinct and consistent sexual orientation. Interestingly, she also found that as women age, they become more aware of their sexual fluidity, and thus tend to turn more toward bisexuality than away from it. And check this out: even though bisexuals continue to be attracted to both sexes as they age, they are more likely than heterosexuals or lesbians, to settle into monogamous relationships. Hm. The more fluid you are sexually, the more stable you become behaviorally. What’s up with that? |

From the NYT:
"We can all pitch in by being better conservers," Mr. Bush said after being briefed on the hurricanes' impact on the energy industry at the Energy Department. "People just need to recognize that these storms have caused disruptions." In addition to urging consumers to cut back to ease the pain of the current supply shortages, he said federal employees should use carpool and public transport and not take non-essential trips. |

London bombed again.
I know this stuff happens a lot in other countries...that there's a lot of bad out there in the world were many more people die. But that doesn't mean that this flat out sucks. It looks like 1 casualty, 0 fatalities, fyi. |

Your nematodes will ship today. They will be in a styrofoam cooler. The ice pack may be melted and warm, but the nems will be ok. Take them out of the cooler and put them in the refrigerator as soon as you get them. They will last up to 4 weeks. Once you open the package, you can keep them in a ZIPlock bag so the frig doesn’t dry them out. Dilute them well (even more than it says on the container—you can’t use too much water). Fill up your watering can, your sprayer or the container for your hose-end sprayer. Sprinkle some nematodes on the top (1 tsp – 1 Tbs) stir them in and distribute. Repeat. Repeat. If you use a sprayer, take the screen out if possible and be sure that there have not been chemicals in it previously.
Yay! |

Things have been mega-busy these past few weeks. bootygrrl was right - I have taken off more than I can handle (or at least I'm pushing my limits). I finished off my second grant proposal last week...something wholly unnecessary for me to finish my PhD, but will make me look like a total badass at MSU if I get either of them. Showing up with a few hundred thousand in funding would be a huge boon to my start there.
I went to LA for AIIDE, which was pretty cool. I got to have some very productive conversations about my research, and got to see Will Wright give a damn good talk. Going out with Sheby & Vanessa on my last night there was something else. Vanessa actually broke down crying when I told her kim was pregnant.
Oh yeah - holy fucking shit - I'm going to be a father.
Work has finally settled down a bit so I can focus on my dissertation work and a paper that's due this week. Thankfully the paper won't take up enormous chunks of time like the proposal did. Things with kitty have been fairly good....but between my crazy work schedule, having visitors (c. and lindsay so far!) and her being sleepy a lot, we've not had much quality time together. Thankfully the visitation schedule is down a little bit (Dads this weekend...then her mom a few days before we move out).
It blows my mind that we'll be leaving Chicago in 3 weeks. I feel so disconnected from being here....like I already have one foot out of the door. Focusing on work so much and not on enjoying what time we have left here makes me feel even further away. It sucks so much that I'm leaving my good friends here, but, then again, that ALWAYS sucks about moving because I've made such amazing friends where I've lived. Maybe I'll get lucky and Pardo or chellman and wild_basil will move nearby.
And in baby news - we got the first utlrasound last Fri. It was very cool to have our sister in town to go with us. Everything's good and healthy. The little parasite has a hearbeat now. :) I'll post a nice and fuzzy picture of it later.
So, today I get to be back working on my dissertation...finally. Every hour I spend working on the thing makes me feel that much closer to the end. It's about time this monkey was off of my back, dragged out into the street, and shot. |

in my hood
Gotta love how much damn crime there is in my neighborhood. Hell, people routinely sell drugs in the parking lot across from our office window. Cops partically swarm our streets, which I guess is better than not at all.
Remind me never to complain about moving back to Michigan. :) |
